New Zealand

Magnificent mountains and icy glaciers, white rapid rivers and crystal clear lakes, sub-tropical rainforests and the rolling hills of the farmlands make New Zealand a photographer’s paradise and a nature-lover’s sanctuary, while the rafting, skiing, tramping (hiking), bungy jumping, and yachting that the landscape affords makes New Zealand a thrill-seeker’s playground. Leisurely walks through the sub-tropic forests, cruises along the fjords, and vibrant Maori culture are only the beginning of what thrills and delights travelers of all ages and backgrounds.

The Grand Tour: 12-Day Sample Itinerary

Days 1 & 2: Auckland, City of Sails

Arrive in the harbor city of Auckland, replete with beaches and water sports. Known as the City of Sails for the large number of yachts that grace its shores, Auckland also boasts a wide array of cultural activities and lush, verdant landscape. Learn the history and culture of the indigenous Maori by taking a guided tour. Take a scenic cruise around the Hauraki Gulf, or try a more adventurous water sport.

Day 3: Rotorua, the Sulphur City

Walk among the hissing geysers, bubbling mud-pools, and hot thermal springs of Rotorua. Make your way through the surreal and sulphuric mists of Kuirau Park. The hot pools dotting the ground will provide enjoyment for everyone from kids wanting to play in the mud and those wanting to soak their feet in this warm, refreshing bath.

Day 4: Mt. Tarawera and the Buried Village

Go heli-hiking and pear down at Mt. Tarawera. Get a bird’s-eye-view of the many lakes surrounding this volcano. Explore The Buried Village of Te Wairoa, named so because it was buried by the last eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886. For dinner enjoy a traditional Maori feast of Hangi, an earthen-oven technique similar to Hawaiian Cuisine.

Days 5 & 6: The Art Deco Decor of Napier

Marvel at the lush, sub-tropical landscape of New Zealand as you drive to Napier. Reminiscent of an affluent English seaside resort, the highlight of Napier is its unique Art Deco architecture. Enjoy a tour of the local wineries, vineyards, and art. Relax on the beach or watch the Ganets at Kidnappers Cape.

Days 7 & 8: Wellington, the Capital

A vibrant city surrounded by hills and a rugged coastline, Wellington is a spectacular blend of culture, heritage, fine food, and lively arts and entertainment. Visit Te Papa Tongarewa, an interactive and innovative museum that showcases all facets of New Zealand, from the emergence of its islands to the culture of its people. It also has indigenous wildlife and modern art displays. Stop at world-class cafes as you tour this compact city, or venture out onto the bike trails that traverse vineyards. Visit the playful resident seals on the Sea Coast.

Days 9 & 10: Queenstown, the Adventure Capital

Journey to Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand. Take an invigorating jet-boat ride or jump off Kawarau Bridge, the world’s first bungy jumping site. With limitless activities ranging from adrenaline-pumping sports such as parasailing and snowboarding, to leisurely activities such as fly fishing and cruising, Queenstown has something for everyone you are traveling with.

Day 11: Milford Sound, 8th Wonder of the World

Journey into Fiordland National Park to see Milford Sound, deemed the 8th Wonder of the World by Rudyard Kipling. Marvel at this spectacular glacial-carved fiord. Walk Milford Track, revered as one of the best walks in the world, and view cascading waterfalls, sculptured hanging valleys, and massive cliffs. Get up close to the dolphins, red coral reef, and other aquatic life from the Underwater Observatory.
