Why The Oberoi, Marrakech Was My Favorite Hotel in Morocco
Author: Diane Scozzafava.
Setting the Scene
I was lucky enough to visit Morocco earlier this year on a Signature FAM trip, and while we covered a lot of ground and stayed at some truly beautiful hotels, one really stood out: The Oberoi, Marrakech.
I spent three nights there, and it honestly blew me away. From the moment I arrived, it felt like something special. There’s just something about the energy of the place, the quiet, the design, the care that’s gone into every detail, that makes it feel more like a peaceful private estate than a hotel.
It was hands-down my favorite hotel of the trip, and I’ve been excited to write about it ever since. I’d go back in a heartbeat, and if you're planning a trip to Morocco and want to bounce around ideas, I’d love to share more from my time there. This place is worth knowing about.
Arrival: A Grand Entrance (Literally)
I’ve always been a fan of hotels that build a bit of anticipation as you arrive, and The Oberoi nails this. There’s a long, private driveway lined with olive trees, leading up to a beautiful, understated gate. The kind where you know something special is waiting on the other side.
When we pulled in, staff dressed in traditional Moroccan clothing were there to greet us with mint tea. From there, we stepped through a series of carved archways into a fountain-filled courtyard, and then into the main lobby — which honestly felt more like a palace than a hotel.
I later found out the hotel took ten years to build and was inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. It shows. Every surface, every corner feels incredibly intentional.

The Setting: Tranquility Just Outside the City
The hotel is about 25 minutes from the medina, which I found to be the perfect distance. You’re close enough to explore the city, but far enough removed that the hotel feels peaceful and secluded. When you're on the property, it’s quiet.
The grounds are expansive — full of citrus trees, fountains, flower-lined paths, and views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance. There are even little signs pointing you to different parts of the property, which gives you a sense of just how large it is.
One morning, I walked the whole loop and thought, this would be such a dream for anyone who loves to run. The shaded paths, the calm, the fresh air — it’s amazing. And even if you’re not a runner, it’s a beautiful place to wander.
They also have a few animals on the property, which adds something really charming. I asked the kitchen for carrots and was handed what felt like a farmer’s market haul — and spent a good while feeding the donkeys!!! They also have a falconer on staff, and I got to hold one of the falcons, which was unexpectedly very cool. And definitely a highlight for the kids I saw around!
My Own Private Moroccan Villa
I stayed in a Deluxe Villa with its own private pool, and it was everything I hoped it would be. The entrance had lemon trees lining the walkway, and the interior was a warm mix of Moroccan patterns, wood, and beautiful tiles. It felt both luxurious and comfortable — which can be a tough balance to strike.
There were so many thoughtful touches: a fireplace, soft lighting throughout, and a massive closet that made unpacking easy. On my first night, someone knocked on my door with a full box of chocolates as a welcome gift... doesn't get much better than that!
I also toured the Royal Villa, which has its own deck and can be connected to additional rooms for families. One thing I loved was that instead of a standard hotel robe, they gave a traditional Moroccan-style one, which is a small detail that really ties together the whole experience.
Pool, Spa, and All the Extras
The main pool is surrounded by palm trees and beautiful loungers, and even in January there were a few guests swimming since it's heated in winter. It’s the kind of pool you want to as much spend time in as possible!
I also tried the spa and did a traditional hammam treatment with red clay. It was incredibly relaxing — they washed my hair, brought tea and little treats, and wrapped me in heated towels. Every step felt intentional and indulgent.
Food: A Full-On Fairytale
Breakfast at The Oberoi is definitely worth talking about! The floral arrangements alone were stunning, and the selection of food was delicious. It’s the kind of breakfast where you want to take as much time as possible.
For dinner, we ate at Rivayat, the Indian fine dining restaurant on site, and it felt like stepping into a scene from Beauty and the Beast. The food was amazing, and there was live music during the meal that made the whole evening feel even more special.
Also worth noting: the hotel makes its own olive oil from trees on the property, and it was some of the best olive oil I've ever tasted!
Who This Is Perfect For:

- Luxury travelers looking for a peaceful escape just outside the city

Final Thoughts
The Oberoi, Marrakech is one of those places where everything works together — the design, the setting, the scent, the food, the service. It all adds up to something really special.
If you're going to Morocco and want a hotel that feels like a retreat but still offers access to everything, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
