Let’s Talk About La Mamounia: An Iconic Marrakesh Hotel
Author: Adam Essafi.
La Mamounia Isn’t Just a Hotel – It’s a Legend
Our family stayed at La Mamounia in 2019, when I was 17 years old. It was one of those hotel experiences that really stuck with me – not just because it was beautiful, but because it felt intrinsically linked with the city of Marrakesh.
For context: I’m the son of two travel advisors and grew up hearing their brutally honest takes on hotels around the world. So, I developed a pretty critical eye early on. But this one? It truly lived up to the hype.
As a teenager, I was wide-eyed over the gardens, the colors, the sheer atmosphere of the place. As an adult, I can now see how much intention and artistry went into every detail.
A Bit of History
Originally opened as a hotel in 1929 and partially owned by the Moroccan royal family, La Mamounia has hosted everyone from FDR to Winston Churchill. But its roots go even deeper: the property takes its name from the legendary gardens gifted in the 18th century by Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah to his son, Prince Mamoun.
That heritage is still woven through the hotel’s architecture, design, and even its signature scent, which feels like a tribute to the lush gardens and rich cultural traditions of Morocco.
In 2009, the hotel underwent a major renovation led by famed designer Jacques Garcia, blending old-world glamour with cinematic modern flair. Nearly a decade later, Condé Nast Traveler named it the #1 hotel in the world – and honestly, that feels earned.
The First Impression: Scent, Style, and Atmosphere
From the moment you pull up to the front entrance, it’s clear this isn’t just another five-star stay. You walk beneath sweeping Moroccan arches into a moody, glamorous lobby – and then it hits you: the scent.
La Mamounia’s custom fragrance, created by renowned perfumer Olivia Giacobetti, blends notes of dates, roses, and cedarwood. It’s everywhere, and it’s intoxicating in the best way.
They say smell is the sense most tied to memory, and I believe it. It’s the same reason a dish from childhood can transport you straight back to your grandmother’s kitchen. La Mamounia knows exactly what it’s doing.
Weeks later, I found myself sniffing dates at the grocery store, hoping to recapture even a hint of that scent (I swear I’m not always this weird).
The Rooms
The rooms at La Mamounia capture the essence of Moroccan luxury. Even the entry-level categories feel elevated, with intricate tilework, arched doorways, and carved wood details that echo the city's rich design heritage. You don’t just sleep here – you experience the design.
The suites step things up with more space and grandeur. But the true showstoppers are the private riads tucked away on the property – hidden sanctuaries with their own gardens and pools, perfect for guests seeking total privacy without giving up access to the hotel’s amenities.
The Grounds & Pool
La Mamounia’s sprawling gardens are one of its defining features. Lined with olive trees, citrus, and palms, they feel like an oasis within the city.
The main pool area is expansive and beautifully designed, with plenty of space to lounge in peace. And yes, there’s a Pierre Hermé ice cream truck parked poolside – because why not? It’s one of those joyful, over-the-top touches that makes the hotel unforgettable.
The Bar & Nightlife
The hotel bar deserves its own spotlight. Every evening, it comes alive with live jazz and a chic-but-welcoming energy. During our stay, we made it a ritual to stop by before or after dinner, and it never disappointed.
One night, everyone was up and dancing like something out of a movie. It’s the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger just a little longer.
The Spa
The spa at La Mamounia is just as luxurious as everything else here. Frequently voted among the best in Morocco, it’s a serene, beautifully designed space offering traditional hammams, massages, and more.
Even if you’re not a “spa person,” I’d still recommend making time for it. It’s that good.
Final Thoughts
We absolutely loved our stay at La Mamounia. It’s one of those rare properties that feels just as special for teens as it does for adults – which says a lot. Whether you’re planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Marrakech or just want a few nights of indulgence, this hotel leaves a lasting impression.
