The Oberoi Marrakech Review: Is This the Most Magical Hotel in Morocco?

The Oberoi Marrakech Review: Is This the Most Magical Hotel in Morocco?

Setting the Scene

I was lucky enough to spend three nights at Oberoi on my recent trip to Morocco, and it honestly blew me away. There’s something about the energy of the palace, the design, and the care that’s gone into every detail, that makes it feel more like your own peaceful private estate than a hotel.

Arrival: A Grand Entrance (Literally)

After a long impressive driveway lined with olive trees, our car pulled into the Oberoi, and staff dressed in traditional Moroccan clothing were there to greet us with mint tea. From there, we stepped through a series of carved archways into a fountain-filled courtyard, and then into the main lobby — which immediately feels more like a palace than a hotel.

I later found out the hotel took ten years (!!!) to build and was inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. It shows. Every surface, every corner feels incredibly intentional.

The Setting: Tranquility Just Outside the City

The hotel is about 25 minutes from the medina, which I found to be the perfect distance. You’re close enough to explore the city, but far enough removed that the hotel feels peaceful and secluded. When you're on the property, it’s quiet.

The grounds are expansive — full of citrus trees, fountains, flower-lined paths, and views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance. There are even little signs pointing you to different parts of the property, which gives you a sense of just how large it is.

One morning, I walked the whole loop and thought, this would be such a dream for anyone who loves to run. The shaded paths, the calm, the fresh air — it’s amazing. And even if you’re not a runner, it’s a beautiful place to wander.

They also have a few animals on the property, which adds something really charming. I asked the kitchen for carrots and was handed what felt like a farmer’s market haul — and spent a good while feeding the donkeys!!! They also have a falconer on staff, and I got to hold one of the falcons, which was unexpected and very cool. Definitely a highlight for the kids I saw around!

My Own Private Moroccan Villa

I stayed in a Deluxe Villa with its own private pool, and it had everything I love when staying in a hotel. The entrance had lemon trees lining the walkway, and the interior was a warm mix of Moroccan patterns, wood, and beautiful tiles. It felt both luxurious and comfortable — which can be a tough balance to strike.

There were so many thoughtful touches: a fireplace, soft lighting throughout, and a massive closet that made unpacking easy. On my first night, someone knocked on my door with a full box of chocolates as a welcome gift... doesn't get much better than that!

I also toured the Royal Villa, which has its own deck and can be connected to additional rooms for families. One thing I loved was that instead of a standard hotel robe, they gave a traditional Moroccan-style one, which is a small detail that really ties together the whole experience.

Pool, Spa, and All the Extras

The main pool is surrounded by palm trees and beautiful loungers, and even in January there were a few guests swimming since it's heated in winter. It’s the kind of pool you want to spend as much spend time in as possible!

I also tried the spa and did a traditional hammam treatment with red clay. It was incredibly relaxing — they washed my hair, brought tea and little treats, and wrapped me in heated towels.

Food: A Full-On Fairytale

For dinner, we ate at Rivayat, the Indian fine dining restaurant on site, and it felt like stepping into a scene from Beauty and the Beast. The food was amazing, and there was live music during the meal that made the whole evening feel even more special.

Also worth noting: the hotel makes its own olive oil from trees on the property, and it was some of the best olive oil I've ever tasted!
