If you’re anything like us, the back-to-back snowstorms and bone-chilling temperatures across New Jersey and New York have us collectively dreaming of sun, sun, and more sun.

If you ask most people, “Can you travel on a passport right up until its expiration date?” we imagine their internal dialogue might sound something like: Yes, of course you can — what’s the point of an expiration date otherwise? And honestly, that logic makes total sense.
But there’s a major caveat. And it’s one that can be the difference between a seamless departure and a very disappointing ride home from the airport. When your passport says it expires in, say, April 2036, it’s easy to assume you’re good to travel right up until that exact date. Unfortunately, I don’t think so, honey.
Most countries won’t allow entry if your passport expires within a certain window of time. That window varies by destination and can range from a couple of months to a full six. Because there’s so much variation, we swear by a conservative rule of thumb:
