Days 3 & 4: Tarangire National Park
Enter the cloistered wilderness haven of Tarangire National Park. The seemingly uncharted terrain of Baobab tree forests, swamps, and vast plains supports herds of elephants up to 300 strong, massive gatherings of buffalo, and an extraordinary number of colorful birds that swoop and strut throughout the land. Eland, fringe-eared oryx, giraffe, waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra, wild dog, and greater kudu are all waiting to be seen.
Day 5: Lake Manyara National Park
Grasslands, forests, marshlands, scrubland, and acacia tree prairies: all of these habitats can be found at Lake Manyara National Park. Take an open game drive past giant mahogany and fig trees in search of the famed baboons, as well as hippos, impalas, elephants, wildebeests, buffalo, warthogs, and giraffe. Ornithologists will delight at the 300+ migratory bird species, including flamingoes, long crested eagles, and grey-headed kingfisher.
Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater
Created by the collapsed cone of a volcano, the 2,000-ft. deep Ngorongoro Crater is an astonishing amalgamation of wildlife. Not only do the crater’s short grass prairies support the endangered black rhino, but lions, elephants, hyena, wildebeest, and gazelle as well. Watch flamingoes share shallow water holes with numerous other fine feathered friends. Visit a Maasai village and learn about the ways of these herdsman.
Days 7 & 8: Olduvai Gorge & Serengeti National Park
Also known as “The Cradle of Mankind,” the Olduvai Gorge is where hominid beings lived for 3 million years. Take a privately guided tour of this archaeological site, and view the famous Zinj skull and other fossils.
Continue your safari to Serengeti National Park. Here the 10,000 arid square miles are home to lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetah, giraffe, topi, and countless others. Perhaps the most well known and spectacular sight is the annual migration of wildebeest and zebra in search of fresh food.
